Mini's Cupcakes

Address: 14th E. 800 S. Salt Lake City, UT

Website: www.mini-cupcakes.com

Prices: $1.75 - $2.00 per cupcake

Review: Cupcakes seem to be all the rage these days and several small specialty cupcake shops have opened up along the Wasatch Front (click here). My husband stopped at Mini's Cupcakes on his way home from work today and picked up 2 cupcakes for both of us to try. I narrowed down my order to a "Pretty in Pink" and a "Black and White" because I really wanted to try both the butter cream and cream cheese frostings, as well as the Madagascar Vanilla Bean and Dark Belgium Chocolate cupcakes, and these two flavors would allow me to try all of them.

I have to say that I thought the cupcakes were good, but not worthy of the high price they charge. The chocolate cake tasted a lot like a heavy brownie and the vanilla bean cake tasted like a normal vanilla cake mix from a box, just a little heavier in consistency. Both cupcakes seemed a little dry as well. I realize my husband had to commute home for about an hour after picking them up, but that shouldn't be enough time to dry them out very much. The frostings were both good, but a little grainy. I definitely would recommend the cream cheese frosting over the butter cream frosting, but even the cream cheese tasted a bit too much like the starchy frostings you will find on any grocery store bakery cake. They were seriously only about 2" in diameter, so they truly lived up to the name "Mini's." They were pretty much bite size and for $1.75 to $2.00 each, they just didn't quite live up to the hype. I like to get a good value for the money and I just didn't feel like Mini's provided that.

I saw the title of the post and was so jealous! But now I'm not as excited. I would like to try the other place in SLC, what's the name? Thanks for sharing!

I've also tried Mini's. My mom and I were so excited, until we got there and saw the ridiculous prices. We got six and it was over $12. Crazy! They definitely aren't worth the money. I won't go back. By the way, this is Melanie Jeppsen.

Good to know! A place that I like to go for fun desserts is the Gourmandise Bakery in downtown Salt Lake. They're a little pricey, but so fancy and fun for a splurge -- and definitely less than what you'd pay for the same thing on a menu in a restaurant. I'd like to contribute to this blog! My email address is flitsta@hotmail.com (by the way, this is Kara -- a friend of Becky's). :)

Hey, will you write a review on Gourmandise? I would love to know what to get and prices and stuff since I can't seem to find a website for them. Thanks!
